Client: EV Connect
Project: Evolve NY/Watertown for New York Power Authority (NYPA)
Location: Hilton Garden Inn, Watertown, New York
Project Summary:
Prime contractor EV Connect selected Voltrek to design and install a total of four (4) direct-current fast charging (DCFC) stations at Hilton Garden Inn. This installation belongs to the statewide EVolve NY charging network, part of a New York Power Authority (NYPA) initiative supporting the widespread adoption of electric vehicles (EVs).
A turnkey approach was utilized on this design-build project, which features dual-port, Level 3 charging stations manufactured by ABB. Specific elements of the project scope included: civil and electrical engineering; permitting; coordination with utilities for new service; solicitation and evaluation of contractor bids; management of construction; and activation of stations.
The Voltrek team worked with National Grid’s design engineers to bring 1200 amp, 480V electrical service to the site. The Terra HP 175kW power cabinets used on the project were hooked up both statically and dynamically, allowing for the power cabinets and charging stations to be utilized on a 2:1 basis, if necessary. Post-assembly, Voltrek provided value-added services in the form of commissioning of ABB back-end software; quality-assurance testing; customer orientation; and ongoing service and maintenance.
Voltrek met and exceeded the client’s expectations on this milestone project, which was successfully completed in late 2020. The Watertown installation is the first operational site in the United States offering ABB’s dynamic charging solutions. These state-of-the-art stations offer lightning-quick speeds—from 175kW up to 350kW—and can be used by all types of electric vehicles.
